Ducted vs. Ductless

Where does the air go?

Recommended

Ducted (vented outside)

Air — along with heat, grease, and odors — is exhausted outside through ductwork. This is the most effective option and what we recommend wherever it's possible.

  • ✓Best capture & air quality
  • ✓Removes heat and moisture from the home
  • ✓Ideal for gas and high-BTU cooking
When ducting isn't possible

Ductless (recirculating)

Air passes through a charcoal filter and returns to the room. A practical fallback for apartments or interior walls where outside venting isn't an option.

  • ✓No exterior duct required
  • ✓Easier retrofit installs
  • ✓Filters need periodic replacement

The Best model inserts are an excellent fit for all of our hood styles. Once you match the width of your insert to the corresponding hood width (30″ insert works with the 30″ wide hood), the depth of the hood needs to be modified to 19.3125″, which is available under Size Modification on the product pages. You do not need to add a solid bottom. There may be some light sanding needed on the depth as the dimension is the exact same as our inside opening.

Please note: a 22.5″ depth increase is needed for the 48″ CP37 series.

Extended depth 22.5″Filler or solid bottomLimited styles

Due to the shape of the Thermador ventilation, these units are not a good fit for all of our hood models. In order for them to work with select models, you will need to select an extended depth to 22.5″, which will leave a 0.5″ gap between the liner and the inside opening of the hood. This small gap will need to be filled in width-wise. This can be covered utilizing a filler (not provided by us) or by adding a solid bottom on our product page.

The 15″ depth of ZLINE is not an ideal fit for our hoods, as it requires either a solid bottom or a 3″ filler to be installed.

Match the width first. Your insert width should match the hood width — a 30″ insert goes in a 30″ wide hood. Then apply the depth and bottom changes listed above.
Frequently Asked Questions

Sizing questions?

Choose "I Don't Know" and we'll size from your appliance type and width instead. Total BTU is usually printed on the appliance spec sheet if you want a more precise number.
Gas burners release far more heat and combustion byproducts than electric or induction elements, so they need more airflow to clear the air effectively. Pro-style ranges with high BTUs need the most.
Generally, yes. Island installations are exposed to air movement on all sides and often have longer duct runs, so they typically need higher CFM than a wall-mounted hood over the same cooktop.
Of course. Call us or schedule a video chat and we'll size your vent, match it to a hood, and confirm the fit before you order.
Results are general guidance based on the information you provide. Real-world airflow also depends on duct length, bends, and ceiling height — confirm the final spec with a Hoodsly expert.
Yes — a hood that's about 3–6″ wider than your cooktop on each relevant side captures smoke and steam more effectively. The tool suggests a width based on your cooktop measurement.
A ductless (recirculating) setup filters and recirculates the air — a good fallback for apartments or interior walls. Reach out and we'll help you choose the right insert for a ductless install.
